Cash-out refis are gaining popularity again — and are still dangerous. According to Freddie Mac's refinance report, the percentage of refinance originations in dollars that were cash-outs soared to 23% by the end of 2018 from 3% at the close of 2012. The report notes that 82% of all refinances in the final quarter of 2018 were cash-outs refis. This chart based on Freddie Mac data shows the surge in cash-out refis over the past five years."

Mortgage applications skyrocket to highest level since 2009 as rates tumble

Mortgage applications soared 55% last week from the prior week and demand for refinances rose to an almost 11-year high, according to the MBA.

The group’s index measuring refinancing applications surged 79% to the highest level since April 2009, he said. Compared to a year ago, it increased by a whopping 479%, Kan said.

The refinance share of mortgage activity was increased to 76.5% of total applications, rising from 66.2% the previous week, the MBA said."
