SOULFUL, FEEL-GOOD, PREWAR HOME
HISTORICAL DETAIL - TIMELESS RELEVANCE
In 1897, Columbia University moved to Morningside Heights. The years following that relocation brought exciting development, and a newfound residential grace to the area. In 1904, to capitalize on the housing exuberance of the day, The Spencer was designed by the prolific architect, George F. Pelham. Pelham created the Spencer to be the middle of a trio of formidable residential buildings for the West Side Construction Company (aka Axelrod Family). Pelham's creation called for comfortable, substantial homes to be constructed on what is now a handsome, leafy street with ease of access to Broadway, and right down the way from both Morningside and Riverside Parks.
Nestled in the quiet back of the Spencer (a well-served, doorman cooperative with storage/bike/laundry rooms), this terrific Edwardian 5-Room residence offers the best of two centuries: Most of this attractive home's Pre-WWI details are intact, and it also offers the comforts and conveniences of today.
With two Bedrooms, side-by-side formal Dining and Living Rooms, and a large windowed, eat-in Kitchen with granite counters, restored 1904 cabinetry and newer cabinetry, a refined foyer, and a sizable, classic windowed Bath, this soulful residence is an affordable treasure. Its hardwood floors, transom doors, high ceilings, and period woodwork are comforting, and its original layout still allows for easy living.
Sweetly situated in a pet-friendly, doorman building (one of New York's oldest cooperatives) with a resident super, this happy home which comes with a huge private storage space offers both convenience and character.
In 1904, George Pelham had a vision. This 5-Room beauty is part of that vision, and was built to last. In 2019, it's still so easy to love.
